I think it is a London Plane Tree which is in the Sycamore tree family. The bark is fantastic like puzzle pieces. Great idea! We have a few in Houston, but I've never been close enought to study the bark.

I think David is right.
Don't ever plant one near your home: They get huge and the leaves never compost. In London they are still finding leaves from two centuries ago, when they were first planted.
